BENJI
Hi Benji here. You may know me as one half of Benji and
Taffy. If not, myself and Taffy were adopted through BTRF
to our fabulous M&D in 2017 when we were two. We are
9 1/2 now. We've had a lot of great adventures and we have
our own FB page. We also now have a little brother BobToo.
Anyways, at the end of last year M noticed my eyes were
starting to look a bit milky. She thought perhaps I was
getting cataracts so she booked me in for a senior health
check (apparently 9 years old is classed as senior). The
lovely vet Jose did a thorough examination. I have a low
grade heart murmur but my active life style and healthy
diet keeps it at bay, and we knew about that.
The shock was that my eyes are totally unresponsive to
light. Not just cataracts M asked, Jose said no, he is blind in
both eyes. Jose asked M lots of questions and they decided
to test me for diabetes, it can be a cause of blindness. That
was fun. M had to catch my wee in a container first thing in
the morning. It took her two days, but it was worth the
effort she put in, I'm not diabetic. Phew, that was good
news, and my liver and kidneys are working well.
Jose advised M to 'keep an eye' on me (funny!) and if there
was any sign of infection or dry eye or me not coping, she
had to go straight back but he thinks I've adjusted and am
coping well.
M has a few friends with blind dogs so she's got lots of
advice - don't move the furniture; put bells on my brothers;
talk to me before touching me; teaching me cues for
obstacles in unfamiliar places - our Canicross training is
brilliant for this. I've got a fancy new bandana and a flag for
my lead. And, most importantly, I've got the best family in
the world so I'm going to continue having a great life.
Lots of love
Benji xx
